I was Miss Sunflower,

Life has happened between updates. Strange kind of life and also happy kind of life. Sharing comes along with the part that yesterday I was in - probably the best - party so far!

Wikipedia: Carnival is a festival season. It occurs immediately before Lent; the main events are usually during February or March. It typically involves a public celebration or parade combining some elements of a circus and public street party. People often dress up or masquerade during the celebrations.

There was Erasmus people from all over... Pavia, Pisa, Trento... the coolest party is when you actually have something in common with everyone and you can talk to everyone - and everyone talks to you! So I did.

On Tuesday to Venice for the last day of Carnival! JAWOLL!

Spritziamo,

061007 klo 19:58
(english below)

Okei, eilinen ilta meni aika mainiosti. Spritzit on kyllä petollisia.

He itse kutsuvat tätä Pohjois-Afrikaksi :D Marco on todella asiallinen ja mukava. Hirvittävän kohtelias, eikä mun mielestä vaikuta edes temperamentiltaan italialaiselta.

Pienestä baarista myytiin joillekin pullottain juomisia. Baarimikon (mikä on naispuolinen baarimikko?

Ollakseen aika suuri kaupunki (210 000 asukasta), Padova on pelottavan hiljainen viikonloppuisin aina perjantaipäivästä lähtien. Kaikki opiskelijat menevät viikonloppuisin kotiin. Viikoilla kaupunki on tupaten täynnä nuoria ihmisiä. Jossain vaiheessa mietinkin missä kaikki vanhukset piileksii. Viikonloppuillat on paikallisille juopoille.

Ristorante pizzat on lähimpänä pakastepizzoista oikeaa italialaista pizzaa! Toki ajauduin italiankieliselle kierrokselle. Satoi ja oli muutenkin hiukan masentavaa. Tutustuin englantilaiseen Phillippaan ja todella eläväiseen portugalilaiseen tyttöön, Luci. Löysin myös ensimmäisen toisen suomalaisen! En kyllä ehtinyt kauheasti hänen kanssaan jutella. Ihan mukavan tuntuinen helsinkiläinen tyttö. Juuri sellainen kuin Helsingin yliopistosta tulevan tytön olevan ;) Tai minusta ainakin. Ei siihen sen suurempaa tarkennusta.

Kierroksen lopulla menossa St. Anthonyn kirkkoon.
At the end of the tour going to St. Anthony's church.

Okay, yesterday evening went pretty funny. The Spritz are really deceitful. In some places they are like water and others very strong. The last one of course happened to be a very strong one. Biking home was very interesting, but went quite fine without bigger trouble.

I saw Shane at Piazza delle Erbe's fountain. We sat outside one of its bars chatting about a lot of things. We changed the place and went to Piazza dei Signori. We had just ordered the second drink when I realized Simona in the table next to us. So us growed with two swiss', a dutch, english(wo)men and a romanian. Later one more english(wo)man and a bunch of italians. Everytime I talk to the girls from Manchester, I get the feeling that they are very superficially interested or not interested at all.

The night continued to a yard of another bar with Shane and few italians. Anthony is from Naples and Marco from Verona. Both of them promised to be my touristguides :) I talked a long time with Anthony (I'm not sure if I'm mixing Anthony and Marco) about Naples and generally southern Italy and its totally different kind of culture. They call it the North Africa themselves :D Marco is very collected and nice. Very polite and doesn't really seem like an italian based on his temperament.

In the small bar they selled even bottles of drinks to some. When the bartenderess came out of the door after closing - she drank the last of a bottle and walked almost straight away :D All the bars close at midnight and another point which you should be aware of when you come here is that the toilets of the bars are disgusting. In many places its just a whole in the floor and the toilet is for both men and women. Both seem to miss the seat and usually you can find nice surprises from the toilets.

To be quite a big city (210 000 inhabitants), Padova is even creepily quite in the weekend from Friday noon on. All the students go home for the weekends. In the weeks the city is full of young people. Sometimes I even wondered where all the old people are. The weekend days are for tourists and shoppers, then you can also see old people. Or maybe they just pop out of the crowd better. The weekend nights are for local drunks. Yesterday evening I saw the first finnish kind of middle-aged drunks in the corner of the piazza... well in the middle of it.

Yesterday I bought a thin wooden ring. Now I wear it on my left middle finger. It's the first ring in a long while that I feel comfortable wearing. Usually I don't like rings, they bother me. Now I have two rings in my hands and I noticed that both of them mean a lot. On my right ring finger I have a ring I got from Iska (uncle) when I was confirmated. I put it to my finger on that day and have taken it off only when I've made dough. I feel naked without it. The wooden ring is or can be a ring that I bought when I lived in Padova or the ring of Padova. Time will tell.

Today I recovered for the first time in my life from the last night - more than the first half an hour. I watched a movie and laid in my bed. I ate a pizza.. mm.. Ristorante-pizzas are the closest to the real italian pizza (which you can get from the freezer of the supermarket)! GO-OD! I biked to the center via internetcafé, where in front of the ESN office started a tour of Padova. Smart italians had asked in italian who want an english tour and who italian. Of course I ended up drifting to the italian tour. It was raining and was a bit depressive anyway. I got to know an english girl, Phillippa and a very lively portuguese girl, Luci. I finally found another finnish person! I didn't get to know her very well but she seems like a nice girl from Helsinki. Just the kind that you can expect to come from the Uni of Helsinki ;) At least on my opinion. No more details there.

In the end of the tour I got to know three german girls. One of them I ended up talking a lot to. Hanna studies education and she's suppose to gratuate as a teacher for german. Such a lovely girl :) We exchanged phonenumbers and are gonna see in the evening at the Sangria party at Prato della Valle. Dad said once that mom has a goal to get to know at least one person per event. I don't know how much of that is true and in which cases it comes true, but I always remind myself of that when I can do it myself. Like today :)

Tiredness and new people,

27.9.2007 klo 18:08
in english

Jepjep.

Sisään pyydettäessä, ESN:n tyyppi alkoi puhua mulle italiaa: "In english, please.. still."

Ruoka on kuitenkin aika erilaista.

Telkkarissa soi Frou Frou monessa mainoksessa. Tarvitsen lisää lämpimiä vaatteita.

The whole day has been very cold. At night I woke up few times to semi-sleep because of the thunder. I think it was right above us, because it was thumping many times.

The days go by so fast. Right in the morning the boiler fixer came and someone for something like YTV to take old bikes from the cellar and I think an old tv. In the evening also a guy from Telecom came to put the phoneline to work... but it doesn't work anyway. Yepyep.

I met my other flatmates too. Giada and Marica live across the hall in a similar kind of room. They came first just two of them and the group grew later on of six family members. All together they painted the living room and their room. Their own room got 2 orange walls and 2 white :) Very sunny. Both of the girls are sunny too. Marica is very nice and speaks fairly good english, though I got this image only based on a quick meeting. Giada seems more shy and because of that more passive. They came this morning to chat in our rooms door for a while :) Asked a bunch of things.

When the cast came in, Anna and I were leaving to the city. We biked to Tito Livio, where Anna had to go to a office and me to sign up for ESN. I walked some time after locking my bike to find Galleria di Tito Livio (the corridor of Tito Livio) and there I found a buzzer for ESN. After finding my way up I had to wait for a while, when a very lively boy was explaining something to two italian girls with terribly fast italian. I waited in the corridor where also another boy came to wait. When they asked me inside, the ESN guy started to speak italian: "In english, please.. still."

I wrote my name and other personal info to yet another piece of paper and paid 8 euros to get a membercard of ESN. I can get some discounts with that from bars and clubs - and with it there was also some kind of travelling insurance. I also got the event list for October.

When I was leaving, Daniele gave me his number, because I asked about the party in the weekend. I had read somewhere that there was going to be on Saturday, but it's not until the half of next month. Funny.. Yes, and he gave me the number so I can tell where the party is if there is one. After few SMS's with Simona - I guess there isn't one. In the end I was proud to be quick enough to answer in italian:

Grazie mille! - Thanks alot!
Prego! Buona giornata! - You're welcome! Have a nice day!
Anche a te! - Back at you!
Grazie. - Thank you.

Later I went to the computer room to update I had written so far. Mara had also sent me an e-mail thank you for the gift I gave her. She had put it hanging on her curtains :) I staid alone to update and read my e-mails when Anna left to take care of some other things. For the first time I was actually alone and I had to take care of something too. In a way it's also relieving.

I went to the supermarket and managed without too much panicing and falling back on english to answer few questions about a bonuscard and plasticbags. Easy yes-no-questions.. hmpf. In the line, Anna called me asking where I am and would I go for a late lunch with Marica, Giada and her. Of course! I said I'll be home in 15-20 minutes. Of course it started to rain when I went out and it was thundering too in the direction of Montà. I biked along these corridors. There is a corridor in front of the houses everywhere. You get to bike along them when it rains. I managed to go to the house on my own! Brava Milla!

I unpacked and we left to eat. The girls were speaking quite a lot of italian, but were also - like all the italians seem to be - very interested in the foreigner. I promised to cook them something finnish, but I also warned them that they might not like it. The food is so different after all. Another problem is that I cannot figure out anything finnish that I could cook here, because I can't find the ingredients in the market. In the Suomi-shop (online) buying the stuff is very expensive as is sending it from Finland too. Help?

In the bar, I ordered a risotto. We went after the actual lunchtime, so we were lucky to even get food. Food itself was strange. Risotto was grey mush, which tasted strongly like parmesan. It looked like grey oat porridge. Yh. But not so bad that it couldn't hunt down hunger. It was nice to eat together, though I was very tired. At home I basicly lived by the computer and wrote letters. It is frustrating not to have a chance to communicate with anyone properly in real time... from home I mean. All the communication costs so much. My prepaid card for 14 euros from Tuesdays is now left with 4 anymore.

I'm tired and anxious because I can't speak italian. Like mom said in a message, I should just start talking. In the weekend, I decided to learn the conjungation of verbs, so I could more easily start forming sentences. In the evening I was thinking if to go to Vestone with Anna or not, but because her mom personally called just to ask me to go there, because she's making proper chicken and a cake, I decided to go. I was very tired, but because there was no welcoming party for erasmus, I thought I could very well go. For the next month there won't be a weekend anyway when I could go.

On the tv, they play Frou Frou in a commercial. I need more warm clothes.

Exchangies at Facebook

I found Marco from ESN, who I got an e-mail earlier, from Facebook. There is a group for "Students coming to Padua '07-'08"! It is the coolest place where you can ask anything and get answers to it too :)

I'm having mood swings and this morning I didn't feel like going anywhere from this country, but now I'm looking forward to it again!

non-Erasmus

Not being in any kind of mobility makes many thing less easy than they probably otherwise would be. Earlier I was concerned about getting a place to live, because there was no-one to help me and I'm still continuously concerned about actually getting to study the single courses. Getting to the courses at all. But aside from those, I was worrying about how I would get to know people. As being a volunteer myself here in my university in the activities of ESN (Erasmus Student Network), I found the solution very near. I contacted the local ESN just today and got an answer very quickly.

Andrea, the secretary of ESN Padova, sent me a very warm e-mail telling me that they don't only welcome Erasmus student, but from other types of international mobilities too, such as people from China, Australia and USA and volunteers of EVS (European Volunteering Service). "We believe spirit is more important than papers!"

She also said that ESN Padova is there to help students to intergrate in the social life of Padova by organising parties, trips, cultural events, photo/dance/theater courses, concerts and a lot of activities. Because there is more than 700 students per year as well as italians, but the association is powered by voluteer power, the membership fee is there to make the prices of the events lower.

I'm getting even more excited about going. Now I just have to wait to get to actually sign up for the courses. That's the most stressing part at the moment. So keep the thumbs up and fingers crossed.
